2018-12-13erts: Fix seq_trace:reset_trace dirty gc bugLukas Larsson
When seq_trace:reset_trace could be called while a process was doing a dirty GC. This triggered a race where all signals was moved to the internal signal queue during the GC which in turn caused the a heap overrun problem. This fix makes it so that the main and msgq lock are taken before the clear. This will make sure that we are allowed to do the clear.
2018-10-19Honor the max heap size when copying literals after purgingBjörn Gustavsson
When a module has been purged from memory, any literals belonging to that module will be copied to all processes that hold references to them. The max heap size limit would be ignored in the garbage collection initiated when copying literals to a process. If the max heap size was exceeded, the process would typically be terminated in the following garbage collection. Since the process would be killed anyway later, kill the process before copying a literal that would make it exceed its max heap size. While at it, also fix a potential bug in `erlang:garbage_collect/0`. If it was found that the max heap sized had been exceeded while executing `erlang:garbage_collect/0`, the process would enter a kind of zombie state instead of being properly terminated.
2018-08-03erts: Fix seq_trace to not clear token for system messagesLukas Larsson
A lot of erts internal messages used behind APIs to create non-blocking calls, e.g. port_command, would cause the seq_trace token to be cleared from the caller when it should not. This commit fixes that and adds asserts that makes sure that all messages sent have to correct token set. Fixes: ERL-602

2018-04-19Make stacktraces consistent when backtrace_depth is 0Björn Gustavsson
It is allowed to set the backtrace depth to 0, but when an exception is catched the stacktrace will still contain one element: 1> erlang:system_flag(backtrace_depth, 0). 8 2> catch error(badarg). {'EXIT',{badarg,[{shell,apply_fun,3, [{file,"shell.erl"},{line,908}]}]}} However, when an exception is raised using `erlang:raise/3`, there will be no elements in the stacktrace: 3> catch erlang:raise(error, badarg, [{fake,name,[arg],[]}]). {'EXIT',{badarg,[]}} Since the `error_handler` module uses `erlang:raise/3` to raise an exception when an undefined function is called, there will not be any stacktrace when calling an undefined function: 4> catch undef_module:undef_name(some_argument). {'EXIT',{undef,[]}} Fix this inconsistency by changing `erlang:raise/3` so that it always includes one element in the stacktrace: 3> catch erlang:raise(error, badarg, [{fake,name,[arg],[]}]). {'EXIT',{badarg,[{fake,name,[arg],[]}]}} 4> catch undef_module:undef_name(some_argument). {'EXIT',{undef,[{undef_module,undef_name,[some_argument],[]}]}}

2018-03-21Implementation of true asynchronous signaling between processesRickard Green
Communication between Erlang processes has conceptually always been performed through asynchronous signaling. The runtime system implementation has however previously preformed most operation synchronously. In a system with only one true thread of execution, this is not problematic (often the opposite). In a system with multiple threads of execution (as current runtime system implementation with SMP support) it becomes problematic. This since it often involves locking of structures when updating them which in turn cause resource contention. Utilizing true asynchronous communication often avoids these resource contention issues. The case that triggered this change was contention on the link lock due to frequent updates of the monitor trees during communication with a frequently used server. The signal order delivery guarantees of the language makes it hard to change the implementation of only some signals to use true asynchronous signaling. Therefore the implementations of (almost) all signals have been changed. Currently the following signals have been implemented as true asynchronous signals: - Message signals - Exit signals - Monitor signals - Demonitor signals - Monitor triggered signals (DOWN, CHANGE, etc) - Link signals - Unlink signals - Group leader signals All of the above already defined as asynchronous signals in the language. The implementation of messages signals was quite asynchronous to begin with, but had quite strict delivery constraints due to the ordering guarantees of signals between a pair of processes. The previously used message queue partitioned into two halves has been replaced by a more general signal queue partitioned into three parts that service all kinds of signals. More details regarding the signal queue can be found in comments in the erl_proc_sig_queue.h file. The monitor and link implementations have also been completely replaced in order to fit the new asynchronous signaling implementation as good as possible. More details regarding the new monitor and link implementations can be found in the erl_monitor_link.h file.

2017-11-15erts: Let send(_,_,[noconnect]) enqueue msg on pending connection.Sverker Eriksson
The least bad behavior I think: * We cannot return 'noconnect' as caller might already have enqueued monitor/link that never triggers. * We cannot block waiting for connection as that can ruin latency when 'noconnect' is used to avoid blocking auto-connect (see gen_server and gen_statem). But there might be users getting more cases of bad latency waiting for a pendig connection, instead of a fast 'noconnect'.

2017-10-01Refactor macros for accessing Beam instructionsBjörn Gustavsson
The BeamOp() macro in erl_vm.h is clumsy to use. All users cast the return value to BeamInstr. Define new macros that are easier to use. In the future, we might want to pack an operand into the same word as the pointer to the instruction, so we will define two macros. BeamIsOpCode() is used to rewrite code like this: if (Instr == (BeamInstr) BeamOp(op_i_func_info_IaaI) { ... } to: if (BeamIsOpCode(Instr, op_i_func_info_IaaI)) { ... } BeamOpCodeAddr(op_apply_bif) is used when we need the address for an instruction. Also elimiminate the global variables em_* in beam_emu.c. They are not really needed. Use the BeamOpCodeAddr() macro instead.
