make erlang:process_info/1 not retrieve messages
|
|
process_info/1 retrieves a number of properties related to a process,
including the list of messages in its mailbox. This is potentially
unsafe if the target process has a large number of queued messages:
- there is no a priori upper bound on the amount of memory being
allocated to hold that list, and
- the loop to retrieve the messages is uninterruptible, so the
Erlang scheduler where this executes blocks for the duration
We've seen process_info/1 bring down heavily loaded nodes on more
than one occasion. At least once it appeared to have blocked the
Erlang heart process from executing, causing the external heart to
kill the VM.
Consequently this removes 'messages' from the list of process_info
tags to retrieve for process_info/1. Note that process_info/1 still
retrieves 'message_queue_len', and process_info/2 can still retrieve
'messages' when asked to.
A few places in the OTP libraries need minor adjustments, since they
want 'message_queue_len' but compute it from the length of the list
of messages.

Documentation says that a test case is skipped if init_per_testcase
fails. This is correct if init_per_testcase fails in a normal way, but
if it gets an exit signal causing the process to die, then the case
was earlier marked as failed with reason {skip,...}. This is now
corrected, so the case is auto skipped.
If end_per_testcase crashes, it does not change the result of a test
case, it only adds a warning in the comment field. But if it gets an
exit signal causing the process to die while running end_per_testcase,
then the case was earlier marked as failed in addition to this
warning. This is now corrected, so the result of the test case is not
changed by an exit signal during end_per_testcase.

The following bugs are corrected:
- if init_per_suite is exported from a test suite, but not
end_per_suite, then pre/post_end_per_suite will be called with
Suite=ct_framework instead of the correct suite name.
- if end_per_group is exported from a suite, but not init_per_group,
then end_per_group is never called.
According to the documentation, if implementing an init config
function, you must also implement the end config function, so the two
scenarios above are really not allowed. To make this more visible,
common_test will now mark the non-exported config function as failed
with reason 'undef' if the other function is exported.
For example, if init_per_suite is exported, but not end_per_suite,
then end_per_suite will be marked as failed with reason undef. (If
none of them exist, then they will both be marked as passed since the
default functions in ct_framework are called instead.)
All hook functions are always called with the correct suite name,
i.e. never with Suite=ct_framework.

The test_server application has previously been deprecated.
In OTP 19, we will move relevant parts of test_server into the
common_test application. Test suites that include test_server.hrl
must be updated to include ct.hrl instead. Test suites that include
test_server_line.hrl must removed that inclusion. Test suites that
call the test_server module directly will continue to work in OTP 19.
The test suites for Erlang/OTP are built and executed in exactly
the same way as previously.
Here are some more details.
The modules test_server*.erl and erl2html2.erl in lib/test_server/src
have been moved to common_test/src.
The test_server.hrl and test_server_line.hrl include files have
been deleted. The macros in test_server.hrl have been copied into
lib/common_test/include/ct.hrl.
The ts*.erl modules and their associated data files in
lib/test_server/src has been been moved to the new directory
lib/common_test/test_server. The ts* modules are no longer built
to lib/common_test/ebin. They will only built when 'make release_tests'
is executed.
The test suite for test_server has been moved to lib/common_test/test.
The rest of the files have been deleted.
